Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?

The Employees' Provident Fund interest rate is 8.25% per annum for FY 2025-26. Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance and credited to your account at the end of the financial year.

How are employee and employer EPF contributions split?

The employee contributes 12% of basic salary + DA to EPF. The employer also contributes 12%, but 8.33% of that (capped at ₹1,250 a month, i.e. 8.33% of ₹15,000) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the remaining 3.67% goes to your EPF. Your total EPF balance is therefore employee 12% + employer 3.67%.

When can I withdraw my full EPF balance?

You can withdraw the full balance on retirement, or after 2 months of unemployment. Partial withdrawals are allowed for reasons like home purchase, medical treatment, marriage or education. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Interest earned on your own contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh per year is tax-free; interest above that is taxable in the new regime's higher tier. Employer contributions above ₹7.5 lakh a year are also taxable as perquisites. The maturity corpus is tax-free after 5 years of service.
