Frequently Asked Questions
Is income tax actually zero up to 12 lakh in the new regime?▾
Yes, for the FY 2026-27 new regime a resident with taxable income up to 12,00,000 pays no tax because the Section 87A rebate (60,000) exactly offsets the slab tax. This is on taxable income, which is already net of the 75,000 standard deduction.
How does the 87A rebate work?▾
The rebate u/s 87A subtracts up to 60,000 from your tax in the new regime when taxable income is at or below 12 lakh (12,500 in the old regime up to 5 lakh). Marginal relief keeps the tax payable close to the threshold from jumping suddenly for income just above it.
New regime or old regime: which should I choose?▾
Pick the regime with the lower tax for your numbers. The new regime has lower slab rates and a 75,000 standard deduction but no 80C/80D/HRA exemptions. If you claim large deductions, HRA or a home loan, the old regime often wins. Run both sides of this calculator to compare.
Does the calculator include the 4% cess and surcharge?▾
The 4% health and education cess is included. Surcharge on very high incomes (over 50 lakh) and specific income types like capital gains are not modelled, so treat the output as a close estimate for salaried income.
