What is the difference between monthly and quarterly payments?

With monthly payments you make 12 payments a year at one-twelfth of the annual rate per period, while quarterly payments are made 4 times a year. Both repay the same loan, but total interest differs slightly because of how often interest compounds against your balance.

How do extra payments help?

An extra payment goes straight to the principal, so it stops accruing interest immediately. Every rupee of principal paid early saves the interest that would otherwise be charged on it, which shortens the term and lowers the total interest paid. A one-time lump sum prepayment works the same way.

Why does the first payment pay so little principal?

In an amortizing loan, each payment first covers the interest accrued since the last payment and the remainder reduces the principal. Early on, the balance is largest, so most of the payment goes toward interest; this reverses over time.
