HRA Calculator not working? Here's how to fix it

Most issues with the HRA Calculator are small and fixable in seconds. Work through these in order.

1. The tool won't load

Reload the page, or open it in a fresh tab. If an extension blocks scripts, try private (incognito) mode — the calculator needs JavaScript, which is on by default in every modern browser.

2. The exemption looks too high

Check your city type. If you selected metro for a non-metro city, the tool applies the 50% cap instead of 40%, inflating the exemption. Confirm you chose the correct city type.

3. The taxable HRA looks wrong

Verify the rent you entered. The rent-minus-10% rule uses your rent against 10% of basic plus D.A. If you entered a figure close to your HRA rather than your actual rent, the exemption will be off. Enter the rent you truly pay.

4. You should not be claiming HRA at all

If you live rent-free, in a self-owned house, or with your parents without paying rent, you are not eligible for the HRA exemption. The exemption requires you to actually pay rent to a landlord.

5. The result does not match your salary slip

Your employer may compute HRA using a slightly different basic or cap, or may not have updated your city. Compare the basic, D.A., HRA, and rent inputs line by line. Under the old regime, the tool follows the standard least-of-three rule.

Verdict

Nine out of ten issues with the HRA Calculator are solved by confirming the city type, entering the actual rent, and using basic plus D.A. correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my HRA exemption too high?

You likely selected metro for a non-metro city, applying the 50% cap instead of the 40% non-metro cap.

Why does my result differ from my salary slip?

Employers may use a slightly different basic or cap. Compare the basic, D.A., HRA, and rent inputs line by line.

Can I claim HRA without paying rent?

No. You must actually pay rent to a landlord. Living rent-free, in a self-owned house, or with parents without rent disqualifies the exemption.
