How currency exchange works

Every currency trade pairs one currency against another, and the price is expressed as an exchange rate — for example, 1 USD = 84.50 INR. To convert, multiply your amount by the rate: $100 would give you about 100 × 84.50 = 8,450. Rates are always quoted as a pair: the first currency is the base and the second is the quote. The rate you see on consumer tools is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between what market makers will buy and sell at. Banks, money-transfer services and card networks add a margin on top, which is why the rate you actually get is almost always slightly worse than the headline number. This converter uses static, indicative mid-market rates updated from market data, so it is ideal for estimates, planning and education rather than live trading.

Factors affecting exchange rates

Exchange rates move constantly because of supply and demand. The main drivers are interest rates (higher yields attract foreign capital), inflation (higher inflation erodes a currency’s purchasing power), economic growth, political stability, trade balances, and central-bank policy decisions. A central bank raising rates often strengthens its currency in the short term, while unexpected political news can weaken it overnight. For practical day-to-day use, the pair that matters most to most people is USD to INR — one of the most traded emerging-market pairs — followed by EUR to USD and GBP to INR, which dominate international remittances and travel.

How to use this converter

  2. Choose the From currency (the one you are converting out of).
  3. Choose the To currency (the one you want the result in).
  4. Read the converted amount and the rate — it updates instantly as you type.

Rates are indicative and static for reference. Actual bank and card rates fluctuate continuously and include margins and fees.
